Moments and Exchanges

On a study trip to the Netherlands, we were encouraged to look out for interesting moments and exchanges between members of the public. I was predominantly interested in the way tourists struggled to negotiate the complex use of bicycle lanes in the Netherlands. Often individuals would walk directly into bicycle traffic, unfamiliar with the infrastructure layout.  These scenarios were particularly prevalent by the Rijksmuseum, where a bicycle lane cuts through the middle of the building.

The drawing depicts one instance where a woman was obliviously walking in the centre of a cycle lane, before she was forced to quickly move when a bicycle bell alerted her to her error. While the cyclist maintained a continuous path and direction, the pedestrian was made to redirect her route.
