Geometry

Diagrams showing the influences upon the Adult Learning Centre's geometry; the northerly orientation, the site’s natural geometry, and the public transport routes that needed to be maintained.
The Adult Learning Centre’s geometry has been determined to optimise use of natural lighting (by means of its orientation), as well as access to the site from bordering roads. In the initial investigation of the Adult Learning Centre site I outlined the natural geometry of the site, and the access routes to the area. It was integral to the success of this building that the site could be accessed by public transport and other vehicles, along the main Stretford Road and parallel Bonsall Street.

Based upon the natural site geometry, and the northern orientation, I explored multiple iterations of the plans layouts. The aim was to celebrate Adult Learning, by creating an irregular piece of architecture that people wanted to explore.
The final organisation of the Adult Learning Centre took into account all these considerations, and the plans took the form of three irregular polygons, with interlocking bridges to connect the buildings at first floor level.
